Usage

The extract filter is used to remove unwanted features as well as for separating data into multiple data units. Typically this filter is used to separate the system input features from the desired system output features as well as the common task of removing features. This makes it perhaps the most commonly used filter in Synapse.

Settings

The settings can be modified using the settings browser.

Extract filter settings

  • (Mode)
  • Mode: Extract mode:
  • Split - Moves a feature to a new Data Unit.
  • Copy - Copies a feature to a new Data Unit.
  • Remove - Removes feature from Data Unit
  • (If Copy or Split) New By Ref: Sets if the new data unit will get its data by reference from the original data unit or if it will have a copy of its own. If the data is by reference then changes on the original data unit will affect the new data unit - as long as they occur before the extract filter in the filtering chain.

  • (Info)
  • Columns In: The original number of columns.
  • Columns Out: The number of columns after the extract filter.
  • (If Copy or Split) Child columns: The number of columns in the child data unit.

  • (Operator)
  • Invert: Flips the selection status of all features.
  • Clear: Clears the selection status of all features (sets them to false)
  • (If Copy or Split) Orphan: Abandons the link to the child data unit.

  • (Selected)
  • Show Count: The number of features to show in the list. Useful if there is a very large number of features.
  • Show From: The feature number to start the list from. Only used if the number of features > show count.
  • <Feature name>: The selection status of a feature. If this is set to true the feature will be affected by the filter.

General advice

  • The data source block which is the end user of data units has a built-in extract filter that can be used to remove features. If you wish to keep a feature in preprocessing but not during design/training, then use the extract filter in the data source instead.
